[SECURING GOVERNMENT SYSTEMS] hello@ashter.dev▌

ALI
ASHTER.

Senior Software Engineer specializing in Secure AI Systems

Twelve years of building software where failure is expensive: senior engineering at one of the UAE's largest private groups, a freelance practice, built mostly on referrals, securing national government platforms, banks and global pharma and delivering AI work for two leading AI labs, and now re-architecting production software for the energy industry. I train, ship and run AI systems end to end, and I publish the numbers.

My rule is simple: if it isn't measured, it isn't done.

About Me.

I build software the way security people think: assume it will be attacked, measure everything, and trust nothing you have not tested. From [national government platforms] to [leading AI labs] to [bird-song models for science,] I ship systems that hold up when it matters, and leave the {demo-ware} behind.

My Evolution.

A computer store,and a blinking cursor.

My father left banking to open his own computer store, so I grew up surrounded by machines. I got my first PC at six and spent hours on it: installing operating systems, hunting down drivers, playing every game I could find, and poking around in DOS just to see what the machine would do. It started a lifelong habit: take it apart and find out how it works.

10 PRINT,20 GOTO forever.

At eight, computer class introduced GW-BASIC, and I fell in love with the idea that I could build anything I could imagine. Then my brother built the website for my father's store, and I was fascinated. I learned by watching him, made my first site in FrontPage, picked up HTML and CSS from it, then moved on to desktop apps in Visual Basic.

My first exploitpaid out in cash.

At twelve, the internet cafe near home ran software that capped your time and speed. I found a way around it, and instead of using it, I told the owner. He reported it to the developers, they rewarded him with free licenses, and he handed me a cash reward. I was hooked. Breaking things to make them safer became my favourite hobby.

Won a laptopwith a logo.

At fourteen I entered a competition to design my school's logo and won a laptop. That turned into graphic design freelancing on 99designs as a teenager: real clients, real briefs, and enough pocket money to buy an Xbox. My first taste of freelancing, years before Upwork.

A second career,built on referrals.

From the start, freelance work ran alongside the day job. Some came through Upwork, where I am Top Rated, and through Freelancer.com and Fiverr, but most were private projects that came by word of mouth, many of them on site in other countries. Once I had delivered security work for national government entities and a global pharma company, the rest came easily: a major bank, smart contract audits for the largest crypto exchange, two years on AI projects for two leading AI labs, and a lot of client projects. The work took me to 14 countries.

Improving the models that recognise birds by their songs, starting with the data: cleaning mislabelled and noisy clips, augmenting audio with time and pitch shifts, background-noise mixing and spectrogram masking, and rebalancing rare species. Better data made the models recognise species more reliably, helping researchers follow migration patterns and flag possible new species.

Off the Clock.

Builder at work, builder at home

First hardware project

The smart aquarium.

My uncle, an electrical engineer, wanted his saltwater aquarium to look after itself. Together we added sensors, switches and a camera so he could monitor it, control it and feed his fish from anywhere while travelling. It kicked off a long run of Raspberry Pi and Arduino builds.

Gamer

An avid gamer since the first PC. These days it's Overwatch, whenever I get the time.

Maker

Woodworking, 3D printing, soldering and DIY projects. If it can be built, I want to build it.

Tinkerer

Raspberry Pi and Arduino projects around the house, from sensors to small automations.

Problem solver

Puzzles, bugs, broken gadgets. I like problems that don't give up easily.

Outdoors

Long walks in nature and fishing whenever the weather allows. Calgary makes that easy.

Family

Time with family comes first, and we just welcomed a baby, so I'm learning a whole new kind of on-call.
